The Right Type Of Food
Different animals like different foods. Deer, for example, love fruits like plums, berries, apples, and pears. But they also enjoy munching on acorns that fall from oak trees. Turkeys enjoy a similar appetite, but focus on providing smaller fruits and nuts like cherries, grapes, hickory nuts, and beechnuts. Turkeys also thrive on corn, oats, rye, wheat, and other food crops. Wild hogs enjoy plenty of greenery such as grass, tubers, roots, and other vegetation including mushrooms and bulbs. However, hogs are wildly attracted to agricultural crops like corn, potatoes, melons, peanuts, and rice.
Water Source
If you are buying land for hunting, keep an eye out for acreage for sale with plenty of fresh water, and a stream if you can find it. If you already own your land, don’t worry. Animals will drink from just about any water source, natural or man-made. Create a large pond near a forested area. If you can’t afford a to build a pond, even digging a hole and putting a kid’s swimming pool in it will suffice.
Provide Shelter And Coverage
Coverage should be close to the food and water source. Since coverage is usually the most natural part of your property and mostly made up of mature trees, it is easier to build food plots and watering holes near the forest edge rather than growing a forest near the food and water. That being said, creating a strategic area full of the best food-producing trees is ideal. This might mean cutting down a few sick or dying trees to make way for new, healthy ones. Additionally, deer will require clearings that are still within the forests’ edges for mating and socializing. On the other hand, having areas with a thick disbursement of trees is also vital for providing wind and cold protection during the winter. Use the timber that you cut down to create natural bedding areas – areas that provide good hiding for a sleeping doe. These are especially attractive if they are surrounded by vines, brush, saplings, and shrubbery. Keep in mind that rees are not the only thing that provides coverage. Most wildlife loves tall grass as well as shrubs that they can both hide in and feed on.
